Resumen:
Copper may be used either pure or in alloys employed for dental biomaterialandcontraceptive intrauterine devices(IUD).The present study analyses copper cytotoxic effect on osteoblastic UMR 106 and ovarian cell from Chinese hamsters(CHO K1).Cell were cultured in capsules containing a central pere-copper disk.A simuultaneous analysis was performed in control without copper. After differents exposure times from 3 to 72 h, the number of live and dead cells and under similar laboratory conditions was measured after several immersion times,. We observed that in the presence of copper, the number of dead cells decreased as copper-cell distance was longer, and increased as exposure time was extended. No effect was observed below some threshold exposure times and concentrations. Cell reproduction speed was lower when metallic ions were present, showing higher cytotoxic effect for bone cell lines. Key words: cytotoxic, copper, osteoblasts, intrauterine divice, IUD.
