Resumen:
Groundwater age improves the understanding of resource availability and recharge time scales,
even linking to past climatic periods, issues that can be used as indicators of aquifer sustainability.
The objective of this work is to show preliminary characteristics of groundwater age in the confined
aquifers in an area of the Córdoba plain, based on the sedimentological and hydrodynamic
conceptual framework. Unconfined aquifer (80-100 m) and two confined aquifer systems, CAS A1
(120 to 230 m) and CAS A2 (230 to 320 m) were identified. Chemical and isotopic parameters
were measured (18O, 2H, 3H, 13C and 14C). The results help to define that the unconfined aquifer
has groundwater less than 60 years. The CAS share the same isotopic signature with water from
mountain and perimountain streams located in western areas, which infiltrate in the piedmont and
fed the groundwater system. Groundwater ages were calculated by hydraulic methods: 1.200 to
4.800 years in CAS A1 and CAS A2. Groundwater age for CAS A2 was confirmed with 14C (3.700
BP). Guidelines for the conservation of these deep resources should be established, given their
low turnover rates and good quality for multiple uses.
