Resumen:
The aim of this work is to explain the theoretical principles and methodological aspects that should be taken into account before beginning an investigation using stable isotopes in archaeology. Here, we describe the concepts and the original terms used in geochemistry that are relevant for the understanding and application of this line of evidence. We also show themeasurement techniques and current laboratory procedures used for archaeological research in the Instituto de Geocronología y Geología Isotópica (INGEIS). In addition, we point out the limitations of the method and review the isotopic fractionation that takes place in the organisms during the biochemical pathways, such as the assimilation of nutrients, as well as in postdepositional, diagenetic processes. These considerations are fundamental in theapplication of isotopic techniques. Finally, we make a revision of research works published in Argentina dealing with subjects such as the different situations that can be afforded with these methods and their potential uses in archaeology.
