Resumen:
With the objective of contribute to an isotopic ecology in the Southern Puna that could be applied to different archaeological contexts, an exploratory isotopic study of carbon and nitrogen was made in vegetal and faunal modern samples from Antofagasta de la Sierra, Catamarca. Here we present the δ13C and δ15N values for ten camelid specimens ?five ?vicuñas? (Vicugna vicugna) and five ?llamas? (Lama glama) ? and from thirty-two wild plant specimens from altitudes ranging 3300-4250 masl. Camelid samples display δ13C values averaging -20.0?, ranging from -22.9? to -16.3?, and δ15N values from4.2? to 6.5?, with a mean of 5.4?. Among plant samples, δ13C averages -23.6?, and ranges -13.4? to -27.8?, and δ15N has a mean of 2.1?, ranging from -2.3? to 7.3?. The dominance of plants with a C3 photosynthetic path is confrmed. These isotopic value ranges do not display a correlation with altitude as tight as other studies suggest, while other factors such as feeding domestic animals with fodder and the variable water availability across different substrates may be playing a relevant role.
