Resumen:
Waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) grew significantly over the lasttwenty years. The plastic fraction of WEEE (WEEEP) represents about 20 % of the totalmass and nowadays it does not have a proper final disposal, which arise several concernsdue to its accumulation and toxicity. In previous works we reported the results of a recycled plastic aggregated (RPA) developedusing the core-shell strategy, consisting of a core of WEEEP and a cement matrix withstabilizing additives (activated carbon) as a shell. In this article we present the results of evaluate different types and dosages of activatedcarbon samples in the amount of brominated flame retardant (mainly tetrabromobisphenolA) leached in curing water of RPAs. Then we quantified the organic compounds usingextraction with organic solvent and gas chromatography methods (CG-FID). IodineNumber (IN) was experimentally determined and a specific surface area was calculated foreach activated carbon sample employed in this study.A clear relationship can be established between the characteristics of the activated carbonused and the amount of tetrabromobisphenol-A and bisphenol-A leached. These results represent an easy method to predict the stabilizing performance of a givenactivated carbon from its IN. These findings are very important because, for productiveventures, the mesoporous properties of the supplied activated carbon can change from batchto batch, allowing take the necessary actions to ensure the correct stabilization of thecontaminants present in WEEEP.
