Resumen:
SEASONAL AND SPATIAL VARIATION OF MESOZOOPLANKTON BIOMASS IN USHUAIA AND GOLONDRINA BAYS (BEAGLE CHANNEL, ARGENTINA). Florencia Biancalana*1, Mónica N. Gil2, Mónica S. Hoffmeyer1, José L. Esteves2 1IADO-CONICET 2CENPAT-CONICET *Corresponding author biancaf@criba.edu.ar The present study is the first report on seasonal and spatial variation of mesozooplankton biomass in Ushuaia (UB) and Golondrina (GB) bays (Beagle Channel, Argentina). Sampling was carried out every three months from August 2004 to June 2005. Mesozooplankton samples and measures of salinity, temperature and chlorophyll a were obtained from 22 and 7 stations located in UB and GB, respectively. Biomass was estimated by the gravimetric method in terms of wet weight. The mean biomass values ranged from 1.91 (winter) to 23.04 mg ww m-3 (summer) in UB, and from 2.71 (spring) to 4.63 mg ww m-3 (winter) in GB. Significant seasonal differences of mean biomass were only found for UB but not for GB. On the other hand, the comparison of mesozooplankton mean biomass between the two bays showed significant differences only in March 2005 (p<0.05). An increase of mesozooplankton biomass from spring to summer in UB coincided with the increase of chlorophyll a, and temperature, and with a salinity decrease. Concerning spatial biomass variation, the highest values were located mainly close the coast of both bays. Differences on both seasonal and spatial distribution patterns of mesozooplankton biomass seem to be related to distinct conditions of local circulation, chlorophyll a, salinity and temperature.
