Resumen:
The life cycle of Punctaria latifolia was studied under culture conditions. The material was collected in the intertidal zone of Villa del Mar and Bay San Blas (Buenos Aires) Argentina, South America, during of August and December of 2003. It was found adhered to the rocky substrate and on Spartina alterniflora plants. This species presented a haplodiplobiontic heteromorphic life cycle. Sporophytes presented both plurilocular and unilocular sporangia. The asexual reproduction was evidenced by the germination of unispores that originated microscopic gametophytes. Zygotes reconstituted the diploid phase. Chromosome counts gave 16 and 8 for diplo- and haplo- phases, respectively.
