Resumen:
A determining factor in the coastal decision making is the absence of continuous information due to the impossibility to collect data for different reasons. High costs of data acquisition or the existence of phenomena that need to be sampled without altering their natural conditions are the principal causes. Remote sensing and image processing are among one of the preferred non-invasive monitoring techniques to obtain long-term information for environmental studies in the last decade.Image-based real time monitoring, however, is limited given the lack of adequate processingalgorithms. This paper evaluates the application of video systems for monitoring beach morphology and dynamics, specially the development of a methodology to extract information employing image processing techniques. An image processing tool to detect zones of the beach based in video system is developed which shows a very high level of accuracy and provide data to aid coastal managers.
