Interferon alpha (IFNα) is a protein drug used to treat oncological diseases and viral infections. Its short half-life, low therapeutic index and fluctuations in drug plasma levels can lead to severe adverse effects1. PEG-IFNα has improved drug efficacy. Nontheless, adverse effects are still an issue. The objective of this work was to design and thoroughly characterize a suitable drug delivery system (DDS) able to protect and control the release of IFNα2b, aiming to reduce its frequency of administration.
