.Background: Galectins have been implicated in several biological processes as regulators of the immune system. However, the role of galectin-1 (Gal1) in the biology of B cells has not been fully elucidated. Here we studied the role of Gal1-glycan interactions in the survival of B cells subpopulations of the spleen.Methods: B cells from WT, Magt5-/- and St6gal1-/- mice were purified by magnetic columns and cell sorting. Cell death was analyzed by TUNEL assay. Glycophenotype was assessed by biotinylated lectins and flow cytometry. Results: We found that rGal1 reduces B cell survival and induces B cell apoptosis in vitro (P
