Alzheimer?s disease (AD) is the principal cause of dementia in the elderly. One histopathological hallmark of AD is the presence of senile plaques, extracellular deposits principally composed of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides, which are normally surrounded by reactive glia. We studied early alterations in hippocampal astrocytes and their progression during the degenerative process in PDAPP transgenic mice, a model of AD.
