Integrated navigation systems are viewed in thecontext of the deterministic and stochastic observabilitytheories. Practical empirical measures of observability andreconstructibility are proposed based on orthogonal subspacedecomposition of the state space. For a given instrumentalconfiguration a deterministic observability measure allows toqualify the persistence of excitation (POE) implicit in thevehicle?s motion. The combined effects of POE and theinstrumental performance are evaluated with an instantaneousstochastic state reconstructibility measure. Both measures areillustrated using flight data of a sounding rocket.
