Resumen:
Previously, we showed that 3-methylcholathrene (3MC), a polyaromatic hydrocarbon, alters the ovarian function by affecting the follicle integrity, and causes DNA damage in peripheral blood, bone marrow and oocytes. Now, we studied the effect of daily and non-daily exposure to 3MC on the oocyte integrity, the induction of apoptosis in the ovary and the ability of α-naphthoflavone (αNF) to prevent this action.Immature rats were i.p. injected, daily or three times a week, with 3MC (0.1 and 1 mg/kg) and/or αNF (80 mg/kg) for 20 days. Oocyte integrity, by morphological parameters; oocyte viability, by fluorescent dyes; meiotic spindle, by immunostaining, and apoptosis, by TUNEL kit, were examined. Compared with controls (C), all doses of 3MC increased oocyte area (C 12.4±0.2; 3MC 14.5±0.5; P
