Resumen:
The extensive agriculture of the Pampas has experienced huge transformations in the last fifteen years. The support of scientific and technological knowledge has been relevant in all this process. Moreover the concept of sustainability has been central as a condition for change and growth. Overall, in the Pampas there exists a possibly well-founded sensation that the ecological impact of agriculture has been, so far, low.Modern technologies have contributed to increase productivity and sustainability simultaneously in the cropping systems of some ecological regions. However, the adoption of better management practices are still needed in some areas to fully sustain the functioning and structure of the Pampas agro-ecosystems: Technologies such as better fertilizer management, new genotypes and better crop protection techniques were, however, an essential part of more productive crop systems and, at the same time, more environment-friendly systems.
