Resumen:
The main productive activity of the Province of Neuquén is the extraction of oil and gas. Although the extractive process is controlled, incidents of spills and contamination of soils and water may occur. The aim of this work was to evaluate the content of the water-soluble fraction of petroleum (WSF) and to study the effects of hydrocarbons (HC) on cell survival and its antioxidant system. The chemical composition of the WSF was analyzed by gas chromatography. The total concentration of HC present in the WSF was 3.66 ± 0.24 mg/L and the main components were HC between C9 and C33. Polyaromatic hydorcarbons (PAH) concentration was 0.019 ± 0.003 mg/L. To study the effects of HC, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 mammary tumour cell lines were treated for 7 d with dilutions of the WSF (control, 1/500, 1/250, 1/100, 1/50 and 1/25) to perform clonogenic assays and exposed for 72 h to study viability (MTT assay), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) activities. No significant differences in clonogenicity were observed between controls and WSF-exposed cells. However, a significant decrease was observed in the viability of MCF-7 cells exposed to the lowest dilutions of the WSF and of MDA-MB-231 cells exposed to intermediate dilutions of the WSF (p
