Resumen:
Lethal toxicity and physiological responses as oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion, and growth of freshwater prawn (Palaemonetes argentinus) were examined on exposure to a commercial formulation of 2,4-D butyl ester. LC50-96h and 95% confidence limit were 7.13 ± 1.45 mg 2,4-D L-1 (4.60-8.62). Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion decreased significantly in prawns kept at higher 2,4-D concentrations. The high values of the O:N ratio indicated lipids and carbohydrate use in the metabolism of the animals exposed to 12.00 mg 2,4-D L-1 regarding lipids and some proteins of the control group.  The 2,4-D chronic exposure caused a significant increase in  length increment, but reduced the intermolt period of prawns at a concentration of 0.37 mg L-1 (8.97 ± 1.33 days) in relation to the control group (10.21 ± 1.92 days). The concentrations assayed of the formulation of 2,4-D butyl ester affected the survival of prawns, and altered their metabolism and growth severely.
