Resumen:
Closing the LIA lithostatic loading mass balance for the Southern Patagonia Ice Sheet required the recovery of high-quality sediment cores representing glaciolacustrine deposition across the very large (1415 km2), stormy (maximum daily wind speeds frequently >40 km/hr) and bathymetrically complex Lago Argentino (Magnani et al, G004).The CSDF Kullenberg gravity corer is typically deployed from the R/V KRKII, a customized collapsible 5.5m long platform powered by twin 20 hp outboard motors, using an overhead tower and central moon pool to launch and retrieve the coring aparatus. This system is custom designed for Kullenberg coring and has been successfully deployed on small to moderately large lakes in water depths up to ca. 350 m around the world. The low freeboard and 8-12km/ hr speed, however, can be limiting factors for working on large lakes like Lago Argentino.
