Antarctic governance: Perspectives from New Zealand

In October 2016, delegates at theannual meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) agreed in Hobart to declare a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Antarctica's Ross Sea. This landmark decision and the lack of consensus that entailed years of negotiations as well reveal the complexity of the governance of the Antarctic Treaty System. In this talk I will introduce the reasoning for my visit to Gateway Antarctica with regards to my research project focusing on the political side involved in the creation of a Marine Protected Area in the Ross Sea.
