Resumen:
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) in arrangement with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) has been used to analyze small bone pieces of Commerson?s dolphin (C. c. commersonii) from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (TdF-Arg). In this study we explored the potential of utilizing an analytical and non-destructive technique the SEM-EDS, to characterize a number of museum bone pieces. Moreover we present an easily methodology for cleaning and conditioning bone samples for the microanalysis. Bone minerals (Ca and P) proportions and other major elements such as Na and Mg were comparable between the sexes. Differences for Ca and Mg for age-class were found. Potassium, Zn and Fe were found at 11, 62 and 90% of the samples, respectively. Also rare elements were identified: Cl, Al and in a few samples S, which could have been contaminated during the cleaning process of the museum pieces. The SEM-EDS is a potential technique that allows the elemental analysis of scientific reference collections and its temporal comparison.
