They usually inhabit shallow waters to about 50 m depth at the Argentine Malacological Province, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Golfo Nuevo, Argentina. Only three species outside this area were assigned to this genus i.e. O. acuminata and O. nana, from Mauritania to Angola in the eastern coast of Africa and O. gibbosa from the Indian Ocean. However, the generic assignation of the them is at least doubtful. A complete revision of the species included in Olivancillaria from South America was undertaken. The research was focused on the description of each species, analysis of synonymous names, illustration of characters and distribution ranges, together with SEM illustrations of protoconch, shell ultrastructure, radulae, penes, siphon papillae and egg capsules for all known species. In addition, an analysis of interspecific shell variation using geometric morphometric techniques was done. Eight living species were recognized as valid: O. deshayesiana, O. vesica, O. urceus, O. auricularia, O. contortuplicata, O. orbignyi, O. teaguei and O. carcellesi, which are restricted to the Southwestern Atlantic from Bahia state, Brazil (~12°S) to Chubut province (42°37’S), Argentina, from intertidal up to 70 m depth. A comparison with other genera (i.e. Agaronia) suggested is endemic from Southwestern Atlantic waters.
