Resumen:
Meiotic studies on three phylogenetically distant species of genus Brachistosternus Pocock from Argentina were carried out: Brachistosternus ferrugineus Thorell 1876, belonging to subgenus Ministernus Francke 1985 and two species of subgenus Leptosternus Maury 1973, B. montanus Roig-Alsina 1977 (from the Andean group of species) and two morphologically different populations of B. pentheri Mello-Leitão 1931 (from the plain group of species). Brachistosternus ferrugineus, B. montanus, and one population of B. pentheri have 2n=46, n=23 (males). The typical populations of B. pentheri have n=21 (males). All the species showed achiasmatic meiosis, absence of heteromorphic bivalents, and bibrachial and monobrachial chromosomes of different sizes.
