Fatal scalp myiasis: autopsy finding of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in the brain cavity

ABSTRACT Larvae of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) were found in the brain cavity (on the dura mater) during an autopsy performed at Buenos Aires (Argentina), latitude 34° 36´ S. The patient had been diagnosed with scalp myiasis and tuberculosis. The cause of death was bronchopneumonia. Myiases by C. hominivorax terminated by death have been described from Argentina, but this case is, to the authors’ knowledge, the first in which larvae have reached the brain cavity from the scalp. Larvae of Diptera inside the brain cavity are an unusual autopsy finding. Although C. hominivorax is common in most of the territory of Argentina, medical practitioners may underrate the damage it can inflict. RÉSUMÉ Des larves de Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) furent trouvées dans un cerveau (dure-mère) lors d’une autopsie réalisée à Buenos Aires (Argentine), latitude 34° 36´ S. On a diagnostiqué chez le patient une myiase du cuir chevelu et une tuberculose. La cause du décès était une bronchopneumonie. Les myiases causées par C. hominivorax résultant en la mort du patient ont déjà été observées en Argentine, mais selon les auteurs, il s’agit de la première fois que les larves se sont rendues dans le cerveau à partir du cuir chevelu. Les larves de diptères à l’intérieur du cerveau sont rarement observées durant une autopsie. Bien que C. hominivorax soit commun dans la majeure partie du territoire argentin, les médecins praticiens tendent à sous-estimer le dommage qu’il peut infliger.
