Resumen:
The main research on native populations? historical demography in South America was developed in the late 1970s, in a context of new questions and proposals on Andean history (Murra, 1975; Sanchez Albornoz, 1978; Cook, 1981). This increase of new ideas was possible thanks to groups of intellectuals working together, coming from different fields, such as history, archaeology, and anthropology. In this context, historical demographers begun to ask and answer questions on the decline of the native population since the conquest, and what is more important, they raised new demographic inquiries. This was the ?golden age? of Andean historical demography and although there were many contributions to the field later, it was this multidisciplinary context that made that rich atmosphere for research, interchange and innovations in the field possible. The history of native population developed later in different directions, including other geographies and subjects. However, in my opinion, we still have questions that cannot be answered without two skills: identifying the demographic challenges indigenous people have had during colonial times, and interpreting, combining and complementing historical sources. The solution can be found within multidisciplinary work, or at least this is my proposal for this book.
