Resumen:
The continuous advances in the technology of refractory materials promote the development of materials operating in extreme conditions. In these circumstances, the effects of different damage mechanisms, start to be critics and it is required to employ characterization techniques that provide detailed information about their microstructures and transformations. Conventional techniques such as optical (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used to characterize different structural aspects on refractory materials. The Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) technique in nonconductive materials has the potential to extract valuable information, however few works have been performed in refractories materials. The main goal of this paper is to report information of Orientation Image Microscopy application, based on the automated acquisition and indexing of EBSD patterns in Scanning Electron Microscope, to analyze microstructure and microtexture induced by the wear mechanisms in a submerged entry nozzle in contact with a mould flux. Through these applications, advantages of the technique will be discussed. The information is correlated with mould flux physical properties and the phases developed in the system nozzle-flux predicted by thermodynamic simulation.
