Virus-like particles (VLPs) are ideal
vaccine candidates for numerous reasons such as immunogenicity and null
infective capacity. However, in order
to produce cost-effective vaccines, the technology focus should be put on
bacterialy expressed recombinant proteins. These are almost always produced as unfolded proteins or
inclusion bodies, and the challenge is to be able to fold the capsomeres and assembly
the VLPs in vitro. We present the
case of HPV VLPs, where the main focus is the world population that cannot afford a high cost vaccine.
