Resumen:
Prediction and control of steel microstructure obtained in continuous casting products is an essential task toproduce high quality steels. In the present work, the solidification structure of a medium carbon, high chromiumsteel was investigated. To obtain controlled solidification parameters, laboratory ingots were cast simulatingcontinuous casting variables. Macro and microstructure were evaluated using different metallographictechniques. Several reagents were tested in order to find the most suitable one for each purpose. The evolution ofaustenitic grain size from surface to center of the ingot was measured. Additionally, the change of primary andsecondary dendrite arm spacing with the distance to billet surface was also assessed. Mathematical models wereapplied to predict the evolution of these solidification parameters in the billet section. Using the parametersdeveloped in the present work, a reasonable agreement between calculated and measured results was obtained. Finally, the evolution of chromium microsegregation along the ingot section was also assessed.
