Resumen:
This article describes the results of recent investigations carried out by the authors, aimed at characterizing the macrostructure developed in free graphite cast irons during solidification. The research makes use of a specially developed experimental technique, called DAAS. The results show that all types of free graphite cast irons, namely flake, spheroidal and compacted, show relatively large solidification units or grains, originated from a single austenite dendrite. The consequences of this behavior on the homogeneity and soundness of cast irons is discussed.
