Resumen:
Chemically, vegetable oils are triglycerides, triesters of glycerol and different fatty acids. In particular, tung oil (TO) is available as a major product from the seeds of the tung tree and it is composed mainly of a glyceride of -eleostearic acid, a conjugated triene. This highly unsaturated, conjugated system is largely responsible for the rapid polymerization occurring in the presence of atmospheric oxygen and the outstanding drying properties of this oil, which is commonly used in the coating and painting industry. The high amount of unsaturations present in the tung oil allow the reaction with reactive monomers like styrene in cationic polymerizations to obtain thermoset polymers. On the other hand, the transterification of tung oil with methanol allow obtaining a new monomer that can replace styrene. Furthermore, the use of small percentages of nanoparticles, as magnetite, advantageously changes some polymer properties, incorporating magnetic behavior in the obtained nanocomposites. Thus, depending on the amount and dispersion of nanoparticles in the matrix, they can lead to changes in the magnetic response without affecting other properties such as low density and mechanical properties. The aim of this work is to study the changes in properties of new copolymers based on tung oil and methyl ester of tung oil obtained by cationic polymerization with the addition of nanomagnetite. The mechanical properties as well as the magnetic behavior of the nanocomposites were analyzed.
