Resumen:
The design of highly porous polymer scaffolds, for application in tissue engineering, has been focused on the production of biomaterials with a set of properties promoting specific biological responses for each type of cell, tissue and application. To attain this goal, the characterization and quantification of the morphological properties of these polymericscaffolds is necessary, in order to associate them with the mechanical and biological properties. This paper proposes the use of the granulometric size function, computed from the scaffold images, to develop algorithms that help the specialists in the characterization of the shape, size, stocking density and orientation of the arrays. The proposed method detects morphological changes with more than 90% accuracy, compared with the manual analysis performed by the experts. This analysis enables a good characterization of the polymer scaffold images, becoming a useful tool for specialists in this area of research.
