Resumen:
The spontaneous roughening of Si(100) due to halogen adsorption has been believed to arise from steric repulsions between adsorbates. However, significant roughening occurs even for coverages that are substantially below a monolayer questioning the role of steric repulsions. Very recently, new mechanisms that can be present in the Cl/Si(100) system have been proposed. We use Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the consequences of the proposed interactions that can roughen the surface. We present the substrate morphologies and adsorbate coverage dependences that emerge from the proposed interactions and compare these results with experiments.
