COVER OF VEGETATION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOIL Dynamic of vegetation and changes of chemical characteristics of the soil were studied in recovered petroleum disposal sites of the Petroleum Deposit “El Huemul-Koluel Kaike” of the Total Austral S. A., in Santa Cruz Province (Argentina). We also studied the effect of furrowing the soil, sowing Bromus unioloides and fertilisation with N and P on the total  vegetation cover. Six locations containing petroleum waste disposal site were studied to measure soil chemical properties on both within and out of the locations in order to compare the effect of the recovery, and the changes of the total vegetation cover with time. The used soils for recovering the areas had higher soil pH and electrical conductivity reflecting higher Ca and Na salt content than the natural undisturbed soils. The total vegetation cover increased and the total content of hydrocarbons in surface decreased with time. The most important grasses that colonise the site were: Hordeum pubiflorum, Bromus unioloides and Stipa humilis; but the forbs were: Erodium cicutarium, Lepidium perfoliatum and Brassica campestris. RESUMEN Se estudió la dinámica de la vegetación y los cambios en las características químicas del suelo en piletones tapados del yacimiento “El Huemul-Koluel Kaike” de Total Austral S. A., en la Provincia de Santa Cruz (Argentina). También se estudió el efecto del surcado del terreno, siembra de cebadilla criolla y fertilización con N y P, sobre la cobertura vegetal. Se estudiaron 6 locaciones de distintas características y se observaron los cambios de la vegetación con el tiempo. El suelo empleado para el tapado de los piletones tuvo valores altos de pH, conductividad eléctrica, y Ca y Na respecto al suelo natural sin disturbar; e indicaría que se trata de suelo subsuperficial. La cobertura total aumentó y la concentración de HCT en superficie disminuyó con el tiempo. Las especies más importantes que colonizan el lugar fueron: Hordeum pubiflorum, Bromus unioloides y Stipa humilis; mientras que las dicotiledóneas fueron: Erodium cicutarium, Lepidium perfoliatum y Brassica campestris. El surcado del terreno, la siembra de Bromus unioloides y la fertilización con N y P aumentaron la cobertura total
